The Melbourne Prize Trust’s (the Trust) origins date back to 2000 with the unveiling of The Magic Pudding sculpture, as a centerpiece of a new childrens’ garden in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) – this is now a landmark in the city. At the time of the launch of The Magic Pudding sculpture and children’s garden precinct, the unique concept for a prize to recognize and reward our creative resources under the banner of a major city was also made public – the annual Melbourne Prize.

The Magic Pudding sculpture as a centrepiece in a children’s garden precinct within the city of Melbourne and concept for the annual Melbourne Prize were conceived by Simon H Warrender earlier in 1998, during his time as a member of the Committee for Melbourne’s Future Focus Group. The Magic Pudding sculpture project took 2 years to develop. Click here for more information on the limited editioned miniatures of The Magic Pudding scuplture.

Following the success of The Magic Pudding sculpture project, Mr Warrender went on to develop the annual Melbourne Prize with the Committee for Melbourne. In 2004, to coordinate the annual Melbourne Prize, the Melbourne Prize Trust was incorporated as an Income Tax Exempt Charity and listed on the Australian Federal Government’s Register of Culture Organisations with Deductible Gift Recipient status. The Founding Partners of the Trust include the Committee for Melbourne, Cornwell, Ernst & Young and Minter Ellison.
