In November 2004 at Federation Square Melbourne, the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture 2005 was announced, with entries opening in early 2005, along with the three-year annual Melbourne Prize cycle. The cycle includes the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture (2005), the Melbourne Prize for Literature (2006) and the Melbourne Prize for Music (2007), commencing again with the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture in 2008.
The objectives of the Melbourne Prize Trust are to recognise and reward talent and excellence, foster creative and cultural development and demonstrate the value of our creative resources. The Trust achieves these objectives by running the annual Melbourne Prize, which assist artists to develop and reach their full potential. Each annual Melbourne Prize offers professional development, exhibition, international travel and financial reward and is supported by a combination of private, public and corporate partnerships. In each sector the annual Melbourne Prize aims to be the most valuable prize of its kind. The annual Melbourne Prize is an initiative of the Committee for Melbourne.
Funds generated from the sale of limited edition (under copyright) miniatures of The Magic Pudding sculpture, located in the Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) in Melbourne, contribute to the annual Melbourne Prize.
